  • the GREAT wall

    Tuesday, March 27, 2007

The main reason why I needed to go to China was to climb the Great Wall. Now I can officially say I've done it (and I even have a certificate to prove it)!

    1st stop -  MING TOMBS

"50 kilometers northwest from Beijing City lies the Ming Tombs - the general name given to the mausoleums of 13 emperors of the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644). The mausoleums have been perfectly preserved, as has the necropolis of each of the many emperors. Because of its long history, palatial and integrated architecture, the site has a high cultural and historic value. The layout and arrangement of all thirteen mausoleums are very similar but vary in size as well as in the complexity of their structures."

    greatwall07

2nd, 3rd, & 4th stop - to different factories trying to LURE innocent tourists into buying their stuff - Minh & I told ourselves we wouldn't be that dumb.. but guess what? I gave in & bought a silk blanket for my mama. hahaha

    greatwall08

    greatwall11

:: paid 3 times the normal price just so they could write my name - we didn't know we got jipped until the next day when we went to the market in town ::

    greatwall43

:: how could I resist buying a silk blanket when I saw exactly how they made it? starting from getting the silk from the worms... ::

    the GREAT WALL @ Badaling

"The Great Wall of China, one of the greatest wonders of the world, was enlisted in the World Heritage by UNESCO in 1987. Just like a gigantic dragon, the Great Wall winds up and down across deserts, grasslands, mountains and plateaus, stretching approximately 6,700 kilometers (4,163 miles ) from east to west of China. With a history of more than 2000 years, some of the section of the great wall are now in ruins or even entirely disappeared. However, it is still one of the most appealing attractions all around the world owing to its architectural grandeur and historical significance."

    greatwall12

:: the tour leader made me hold the "follow me" stick.. sometimes in Japan - I really feel like I need one of these ::

    greatwall13

    greatwall14

:: random bears at the entrance of the wall ::

    greatwall15

:: Minh & I wanted to walk the whole way up the wall, but since we were on a tour - we had to decide as a group if we wanted to ride this rollercoaster type ride up and then walk it.. or walk it all the way.. since most of the people in our group were way older.. we lost and rode this up.. ends up we were extremely grateful because even the 'shorter' distance we climbed was dang good enough ::

    greatwall16

    greatwall17

    greatwall18

:: at the beginning of our climb ::

    greatwall19 greatwall20

    greatwall21

"The site of the Badaling section of the wall has been a strategic location since the Spring and Autumn Period (770 - 476 B.C.) when the first walls were built. Badaling is the highest section of the Jundu mountain and historically protected the Juyongguan Pass. This portion of the wall was reconstructed during Ming times and was renovated in modern times as well. It was the first section to open for tourism in 1957." taken from here.

    greatwall34

     greatwall36

that I ended up having to RUN down this to catch up with everyone else - I even lost Minh! ::

    greatwall37

:: then when I hit the bottom, I saw him going down on this ::

    greatwall38

    greatwall39

We arrived there late on Sunday night so we just made our way out of the airport, into a cab, and to our hotel - once we got to the hotel we were a lil scared because all the lights were out..but everything ended up being ok and we actually really liked where we stayed and the convenience of it all.

Five Star Red Flag-the Chinese national flag, flies high in the sky above the Square. To see the guard of honor raise the Flag is a must for the tourist visiting Beijing City. You have to get up very early and arrive at the Square before sunrise. Only by doing so can you see the ceremony clearly as there are crowds of people attending the ceremony every day.

    beijing055

    beijing056

"At sunrise and sunset the flag to the front of the square is raised or lowered by a squad of army personnel.  This in itself is an interesting thing to watch.  All the traffic on the busy Chang An Avenue is halted, around 30 soldiers march very ceremoniously across the road and  the flag is hoisted up, or down the poll.  Many people come to watch this, so get there an hour or so before if you want a good view."

    Sunday, April 8th

I met Mike 2 years ago through Patrick. He said he had a friend moving to Tokyo and asked if I could meet him up and show him around a bit. We partied in Roppongi together till the wee hours of the morn on many occasions & he became a part of our "Texas" in Japan crew (him being the only boy, isn't he lucky?) Well on Friday, the 13th - he said farewell to Tokyo and moved back to LA (even though he's originally from Texas) - even though it's sad knowing he's not here anymore, we know we'll see eachother again someday.  Until then, my friend...

We took him out on Sunday to say goodbye.. my roommate told me before about this restaurant him and the boys went to called "ALCATRAZ ER" (jail/mental hospital theme) and there was an AWESOME drink that I knew we just HAD to get for Mike...

    byemike1

:: the girls showed up first and when they asked who was the craziest one out of all of us.. we pointed to Branda.. she says, "It's because I'm black, isn't it?" She was handcuffed by the nurse and then given a HUGE shot ::
