SANJA MATSURI"One of Japan’s most traditional and biggest festivals, called Sanja Matsuri or Festival of Asakusa Shrine. This festival dates back a long time to the Japanese Edo period and was always one of the wildest and most cheerful. In Tokyo, Asakusa area, each year, 1.5 million people are attracted each year to Sanja Matsuri, an enormous number. It is as fun for locals a sit is for travelers. You will have the chance to see many of Japanese traditional costumes, many people are dressed up. During Sanja Matsuri, about 100 portable shrines will be carried through Asakusa area to do a purification ceremony. Later on all portable shrines are broght back to their neighbourhoods to bring blessings and good luck to them. The shrines are a piece of art themselves. Most of them are very big and artistically presented. It needs a dozen people at times to carry one of them as they are very heavy. Asakusa area will be an interesting sight. Besides the procession with the shrines, there awill be much more to see. Musicians, dancers, any kind of performer will come outside to show what they can do. Expect people in a real festival mood on Sanjo Matsuri with lots of food and drinks for every taste. The festival runs from the 18th of May until the 20 of May in this year. The most special day must be the last one when several special giant portable shrines are carried through the streets. These are even more majestic than the others and something one can only see on Sanja Matsuri."
